Educational Weekend @ JB

humble eatery along the streets of "ah gua lane",
right before the nearly run down Shell Petrol Station....
TUA THOW which literately mean big head
was where we had our hearty breakfast.

My soupy bee hoon with
Fish slices, Pork Kidney, Pork liver, Oysters
only cost me 7RM!!!
*CHEAP CHEAP*

Next up was a day of learning adventure,
First stop, Mushroom Farm

The Kampung House
The owner build this using his spare time after work,
which often meant from 9pm to 1am!!
There were even intricate wood carving done by the owner himself!
A hammock swinging with playful children
was seen under the house held up on stilts.
It's a beautiful sight!
Photobucket

Oyster Mushrooms
Thou the room was dark,
the only light source we got was from the opened doorway....
You could smell the fresh mushroom scent!
I swear it seems like someone
was trying to cook up a big pot of mushroom soup!

Processed & Sterilized Sawdust

It's the Kampung Spirit!
The owners took out their Kuali,
deep fry some delicious plump oyster mushrooms
with special sauce for our tasting!
*Thumbs up*
Photobucket

I know this is going to sound absurd!
I've never seen a rubber tree up close!!
This is the first time ever.....
Isn't it amazing what we can get from nature?!?
Photobucket

Kampung Chicken
allowed to roam freely.....
Photobucket

Looks like cherry blossom?!?!
Unfortunately not,
It's water apple!
Photobucket

There were also passion fruit on the farm,
but I did not manage to get a good picture of it.....

Second stop,
Chicken Farm

You can smell it from a mile!
The smell of chicken POO!
OMG!

Chickens in a row living in
Cheapskate overpriced HDB style property!!!!
*I could feel that they are staging Chicken Run soon!!!*
Photobucket

I know this makes me sound very Mountain Turtle....
But, this is also my first time seeing a cocoa tree!!!!
YES, you get your Yummy Godiva Chocolate from these trees!!!
Photobucket

Someone has been cleaning eggs in this lil make shift station
Photobucket

The size sorting machine....
Way Cool!
The noisy machine was so gentle that
no eggs were harmed in the process of sorting!
Photobucket

The nicely sorted out eggs ready to be sold in the market
Photobucket

We manage to make
Passion Fruit Cheese Cake
from all the fresh product we got from the farms!

Dinner @ 有記XO Duck
Apart from the usual food we normally order,
we tried 3 new dishes.....
Claypot fish slices,
Claypot fatty Pork,
and Assam Fish.....

Everything tasted GREAT!

If I had to choose a favourite dish for the night,
It has to be the Assam Fish...
It was tangy and sour....
Perfect for my taste buds....
But, Kitson felt that the sourish taste was too overwhelming....

Signs of a Satisfied Meal!!
Photobucket

You could hardly miss out on this restaurant,
as there are 2 extremely GIANT URN right in front of it!
These pots are used for making the trademark double boil soup.....
In my opinion, nice, but overpriced!

Tedious!
Look at how finely shredded the herbs are!
I've concluded that nonya food are a hassle to cook!
So better start hunting for a good nonya restaurant now!
DSC06442.jpg picture by fattyb0mb0mb0m

End Product
It's delicious!
I had 4-5 helpings to myself!

Some famous landmark @ Malacca
DSC06561.jpg picture by fattyb0mb0mb0m

We tried 2 different nonya restaurant
Banya Restoran & Makko
In general most restaurant in Malacca
has siesta from 2.30pm to 5pm...
DSC06552.jpg picture by fattyb0mb0mb0m
DSC06581.jpg picture by fattyb0mb0mb0m

Food wise, We enjoyed Banya Restoran better....

Desert wise, Makko's Chendol deseves 2 thumbs and 2 toes up!
Nice chunky kidney beans with fragrant gula malacca.....
Oh so YUMMY!

Malacca rich peranakan culture left me in awe!
I have fallen in love with everything nonya!
(and for your information I wasn't one of those
that stayed glued to the screen
when the drama series little nonya was airing!!!
We broke the habit of watching TV pretty long time ago!
We do not watch TV at home!!!!)

So in my honest opinion,
the best way to learn about a culture
is to experience it yourself!!

Kitson's mum has a peranakan heritage.
She spoke dearly of memories she had,
of the delicious nonya food her mum used to prepare
(of which many she could only remember
vaguely bits and pieces of the recipe.
I really think we should gather these recipes,
record them and safe keep them!)
and also the beautifully crafted sarong kebaya her mother wore.

You could instantly see her eyes light up
and feel her heart grew warm
when she spoke about the penang peranakans.

Thank God, my sister-in-law Linda
managed to keep a couple of my Mother-in-law's kebaya....
and I inherited a set of it.
Words alone couldn't sum up how much it meant to me.....
It is special,
and it sits safely in my closet....

I once told myself
if I could shed the fats off from child birth,
I would get myself a sarong kebaya as a reward!

Although, I am still far off from being figure perfect,
I couldn't reisit but buy one!
And I think I am addicted to get more!!!!

I've gotten
a set of sarong kebaya,
tali pinggang (Chain-linked belt)
Koronsang (3 piece brooches)
And I am determine to wear that for my cousin's wedding!

I am still short of the kasut manek(beaded shoe)
to complete the whole nonya look!!!!
Maybe in my next trip to Malacca
I can look forward in getting one of those
*giggle*

I'll post pictures after attending the wedding.
Hopefully, I am able to pull the whole nonya look off!!

24.02.09
HOME SWEET HOME!!
