Sambal Petai & Bento Dinners

My mother-in-law method of preparing petai
would be splitting the pods in halves
to eliminate the chances
of having extra worm protein in her diet....

I've always found this process time consuming and redundant
as I always do not find anything out of the norm
in the petai I buy until today!!!

I found not 1 but 2 juicy worms hanging inside
the comfortable zone of my petai pods!
*puke*
But at least the good news is that my vegetables
are not potently laced with pesticide!
Since the worms are still interested in my food!

I split my petai pods into half length wise,
coz I felt that they taste crunchier cooked this way....

Hiroshi's Bento Box

DSC06311.jpg picture by fattyb0mb0mb0m

I used to be at my wits end!
Every morning I was struggling with a whinny Hiroshi
who told me he did not want to go to school!!

It got better when I started making lunches for him.
He would bid good bye with a big wide smile,
and cradle his lunch box on his lap ever so carefully.....

BUT NOW....
The drama-mellow-mama starts all over again!
Apart from not wanting to attend school,
He doesn't want the bento box as well!!!!
He even shouted in his dreams 2 nights ago,
"I DON"T WANT LUNCH BOX!!"
Sigh....
I must have made terrible lunch compared to the pantry auntie!

Even showing him this `3 lil pig' bento meal
did not entice him to go to school
or want his lunch box!

I am upset
& the 3 lil pigs are heartbroken!

O' lord, Please tell me what to do!

2009 Bento #01

I am finally back to making bento for Hiroshi.
I am glad to say that
he is still very excited about carrying his bento to school!

I have started a new  bento blog under
as Kitson commented that not everyone
might be interested in seeing my lengthy bento write ups everyday!

Cheers
I am hoping for more creative bento boxes creation for 2009!

Is it still Christmas?!?

We all know that christmas is long gone....
But, Sophia is still stuck with the festive mood....
She kept insisting on wearing her christmas hat!!
*duhz*

Hiroshi is just amused that
Sophia is STILL wearing her Christmas Hat,
despite strange stares from passerby!

Tonight's Dinner
It's been quite sometime since I "decorated" the kids' food....
and since I was in the mood,
I did this.....
tofu with mince meat, chestnut, carrot and topped with prawn
white rice with furikake
Xiao Bai Cai with Oyster sauce

I've been extremely busy with spring cleaning
for the coming Chinese New Year!
And I am pleased to say, the kitchen is finally cleaned!
But, the rest of the house still looks like we are living in a dump!

Oh God,
Please send me a Fairy God mother to help me with this mess!

Hiroshi's Bento Box

Hiroshi is having leftover from yesterday's spaghetti carbonara.....

Boiled Broccoli, Spaghetti
(I cut up the spaghetti before boiling them....
it  makes cooking faster and also easier to eat),
Carbonara Sauce with carrots, mushrooms,
potatoes, baby corn & bacon...
Grated Cheddar Cheese in mini container

I think the spaghetti looks more  appetizing it's sauce separated...
What do you think?!?

Bento: Equipments and Supplies

Hiroshi is on a school excursion today.
That gives me the free time to write about this posting....

The 1st step to creating healthy lunch is to get a bento box.....
And since I've already covered
how to choose the right size bento box

I will roughly touch on the different types of bento boxes
that are available in the market.

ALL ABOUT BENTO BOXES
Tiger Thermos Lunch Box
This will keep your lunches warm for 6 hours...
All containers are microwavable...
(please remember to remove lids for heating)
Tigerlunchbox.jpg picture by fattyb0mb0mb0m

Gasp.... I am feeling GUILTY....
In such a short time of my bento obsession,
I've gotten so many bento boxes!!

Top Left: (our latest addition)
Kitson got this ag+ Silver Ion antibacterial bento box
from his recent Japan trip.....
It is pretty, but way too BIG for Hiroshi now.....
Top right: OCBC double tier bento box
Bottom left: thomas the train bento box, Hiroshi's current favourite...
Bottom right: Car bento box from Daiso.... Cheap & Good!
DSC04631.jpg picture by fattyb0mb0mb0m

Simple Lunch Box From Tupperware...
p10055361000_lg.jpg picture by fattyb0mb0mb0m

I find that a good cheaper alternative is
"lock & lock" brand containers,
easily available from NTUC or Cold Storage
I think they will work equally as well at a fraction of a price....
Moreover it is microwavable too!
(please remember to remove lid for heating)

ALL ABOUT RICE MOULDS
These are the equipment that makes your rice extra special....
Top left: Onigiri Maker (Daiso) Top right: Rice BALL Maker (Daiso)
Middle left: Mini Triangle rice ball maker (Daiso)
Middle right: Mini Cube rice ball maker (Daiso)
Bottom: Heart, Star, Bear rice ball maker (Takashimaya)
DSC04634.jpg picture by fattyb0mb0mb0m

You can also use large cookie cutters as rice ball mould too.

Tip: I've found out the by dipping mould into water
before scoping in rice makes it easier to dislodge the rice ball......

ALL ABOUT VEGETABLE CUTTERS
These are metal cookies cutter
that I normally use to cut my carrots with...
Very small effort, but it makes lunch
look so much more interesting and pleasing to the eye....
DSC04632.jpg picture by fattyb0mb0mb0m

ALL ABOUT FOOD DIVIDER
This is the equipment used to divide your food,
so that it will look nice and presentable...
and not like some chap fan (economical rice)
that you picked up from the food court.....

You can use plastic sheets dividers
bento_fs01a_LRG.jpg picture by fattyb0mb0mb0m

or Aluminum Foil
Some has really cute designs on it!!
Check out Daiso!!

Silicon Cups
This is what I normally use.
Environment Friendly.....
and also Kinder for my pockets!
Please check the heating labels
if you intend to bake or microwave in these silicon cups...
*some silicon cups are not made for heating purposes*
DSC04633.jpg picture by fattyb0mb0mb0m

ALL ABOUT SAUCE CONTAINER
You can pack sauce into tiny containers like the ones below...
Hiroshi loves these containers....
He treats them like little surprise boxes....
He also makes sure the content inside are licking clean
when he finishes his lunch.....
DSC04635.jpg picture by fattyb0mb0mb0m

ALL ABOUT FURIKAKE BOTTLES
I wrote about furikake in this post.....
These are the tiny bottles keeping your furikake fresh,
until you are ready to eat it.....
DSC04637.jpg picture by fattyb0mb0mb0m

ALL ABOUT FOOD PICKS
This is great on finger food or fruits....
Just pick and eat!!!
DSC04636.jpg picture by fattyb0mb0mb0m

All ABOUT SEAWEED CUTTER
This pretty much looks like our paper craft puncher....
Except that, this is to make fancy design on seaweed...
So CUTE right?!?
How can you resist such KAWAII things!!!
DSC04638.jpg picture by fattyb0mb0mb0m

img44734729.jpg picture by fattyb0mb0mb0m

This pretty much sums up about equipments and supplies
needed to make fun bento lunch boxes....

Have FUN!!

"lunchbox" for lunch

Hiroshi has not been attending school for the past 2 days...
He caught the coughing virus....
and I highly suspect KKH was where he got it!!
Arrgh!

So therefore, there wasn't any bento posting
for the past 2 days....

Kitson brought a new casserole for Hiroshi From Japan
I think it look pretty neat to serve meals from it....

We had chicken in beancurd sheets,
Mix vegetable of Carrots, Celery,
and Radish garnished with sesame seed,
Japanese Mayo in the Cute container for lunch.....
